Our GIS team is responsible for creating and updating maps covering PATC trails, lands, and corridors, and surrounding areas. They also create digital maps and tools using GIS software. We are always looking for new and innovative ways of providing the public with resources.
GIS
PATC produces maps for most of the areas that we maintain along with other adjacent trail networks. PATC maps are highly prized due to their design and accuracy. No one has been producing trail maps longer for this area and now the PATC produces both paper maps and online maps. GIS volunteers may also participate in special projects using GIS tools to map other PATC assets like cabins and lands.
Producing maps requires volunteers who are skilled in cartography, layer (data) management and the artistry of producing paper maps. PATC currently uses ESRI ArcGIS and Adobe Illustrator for our toolset. GIS experience is necessary. Training can be provided on PATC tools and standards.
GIS volunteers can work from home and generally spend 5-10 hours per week on cartography projects. These volunteers must follow PATC GIS processes and procedures. GIS volunteers work as a team and partner with Membership, Outreach and Marketing.
GPS
PATC has an ongoing need to have detailed field surveys of trails, features, lands and other assets to understand the location and condition of PATC managed assets. GPS survey data is used for producing detailed maps, providing data to land managers, and for special projects. Volunteers are needed to collect and process the information.
GPS Rangers use high accuracy GPS equipment to complete surveys while taking photographs and detailed notes. The collected data is then formatted and stored in a PATC repository. GPS Rangers survey year-round. A free 2-day training course is strongly recommended.
GPS volunteers must be able to hike safely for 5-10 miles and follow a strict data collection protocol. A standard report must be filed for each day of surveying. Survey frequency needs vary, but it is essential to perform at least 6-8 day-long surveys a year to keep in practice.
